Wind today with just a little snow over the northern mountains. Looking drier this week into early next week.

Dec 15, 2024

12/15/24 10:30am: Happy Sunday! Where did the weather go lol...north unfortunately. It now appears this current storm system (the Sun/Mon storm) and the next one for Tue/Wed are now basically going to be nothingburgers as the models shows the waves tracking north of CO (and much weaker overall). Basically just some wind with a little bit of snow for the very northern mountains.

And looking a ways out, basically dry, seasonable warm and quiet weather expected from Wed through Sunday (12/18-12/22) with next more substantial storm system slated around 12/23-12/24 (but even that is looking pretty weak overall as of today).

For today some very strong wind expected over parts of the north-central mountains, Front Range mountains and northern front-range urban corridor. Already pretty windy at my house in Westminster with some westerly wind-gusts of 20-35mph (but is pretty warm, already 55 at my house).

Going to be a windy afternoon especially over the Front Range mountains along/east of the Cont. Divie with wind-gusts of 40-80mph in spots above 9kft. Also windy in the foothills and urban corridor, windiest near the CO/WY border (gusts of 20-40mph)...similar for the north-central mountains west of the Divide.

Currently just a few snow showers over the upper parts of the IPW, RMNP and Medicine Bow Range near Cameron Pass. Model show just a little bit of snow over parts of the Park Range (north of Steamboat) and parts of the Medicine Bow Range from 2pm today to 2am tomorrow morning. Trace-2" in a few spots. For the rest of the local ski areas / I-70 mountain corridor just snow showers, very little accum (Trace to 1/2" in a few spots by tomorrow am).

The wind will calm down some tomorrow in most areas, except for over the Front Range mountains above 9k ft (gusts of 30-50mph tomorrow).

Then then next storm system slated for Tue/Wed is now forecast to track mostly northeast of CO, with just a brief shot of snow for the north-central mountains and a windy cold-front for the front-range.

For the northern mountains: more snow showers from 5pm Tue to 5am Wed, again only Trace-2" for the local ski areas, with maybe a bit higher amounts in the Park Range (north of Steamboat) and Medicine Bow Range (near Cameron Pass again) but won't be much. Windy over the mountains again on Tue into Wed.

Then warm and dry for Wed through Sun (12/18 - 12/22). Next storm system may bring snow back to the north-central mountains by next Mon night into Tue (12/23 to 12/24) but is so far out who knows, may not be much darnit!

Anyway we are actually heading to Costa Rica for the holiday break with my sister and family and my mom and her partner from Sat 12/21 to Sat 12/28, during that time Thomas Horner will be taking over the weather report (so maybe you all will get some weather lol, although not looking like much currently). Maybe all the heavy snow will hold off until I get back (generally looks more active from 12/26 onward but who knows)

First image shows forecast wind-gusts at 3pm today from latest HRRR. Second image shows forecast total snowfall from now through 5am Mon from latest HRRR. Third image is current, local satellite/radar/surface overlay, showing the snow-showers and storng wind in spots. Fourth image shows forecast total snowfall from now through 5am Wed from latest GFS. Fifth image shows the evolution of this boring forecast pattern via 500mb vorticity / wind form latest GFS from now through next Sun morning (12/22).

Go Broncos!
