Warm and windy today, some snow for the mountains Tue/Wed
Feb 24, 2025
02/24/25 8am: Can you believe its the last week of meteorological winter (March 1st is Sat). Certainly felt like spring yesterday and it will again today: Warm and windy on the front-range with some snow-showers over the mountains (and windy over parts of the mountains as well today and tomorrow).
First: was a warm one yesterday: For example Denver had a high temp of 67 and Boulder 66. Was a gorgeous afternoon for a nature walk in Boulder county: images 4 and 5 from our walk yesterday: warm temps, melting ice and snow, lots of mud and beautiful views. Temperatures will be similar today for Den/Bou with high temps in the mid to upper 60s (but windy)
Anyway, first image (current local satellite) shows a thick cloud-deck over parts of the north-central mountains with some snow-showers currently over the northern Front range mountains (IPW, RMNP, Cameron) and over the Park Range (north of Steamboat)...snow showers will continue on/off in those areas through tomorrow am.
Then for the rest of the north-central mountains a better chance for some light snow / snow showers between 12pm Tue through 2pm Wed: generally 1-4" for the ski areas and higher terrain with highest amounts expected along/north of I-70 (Front Range mountains and Park Range will be favored, secondarily near Gore Range)
For Den/Bou and the front-range a windy Monday on tap, with westerly wind-gusts of 20-40mph for the front-range (Den/Bou) and parts of the eastern plains and wind-gusts of 40-70mph expected over parts of the Front Range mountains and foothills above 9k ft (IPW, RMNP will be really windy today). Less wind west of the Cont. Divide.
Windy again over much of northern CO from 12pm Tue through 8am Wed as the short-wave moves through. Especially windy tomorrow over northern CO, closer to Steamboat and northern Front Range mountains and foothills again (IPW, RMNP): westerly wind-gusts of 30-50mph tomorrow into Wed
Colder on Wed for mountain and front-range (temps back in the 50s for Den/Bou). Then back to nice and warm weather across the state from Thu-Sat.
A weak storm is still forecast to impact southern CO / San Juans on Sat night into Sun... more on that later. Otherwise will remain dry across the state through Sun.
Next, more substantial storm slate to impact the state next Mon/Tue (March 3rd/4th).
First image is current local satellite/surface map overlay. Second image is forecast slide from Den/Bou NWS about the wind today. Third image is forecast total snowfall from now through 5pm Wed from latest ECMWF. Images 4 and 5 from our walk in Boulder County yesterday.
