Updates snowfall map for the Mon/Tue storm and a look at snow for Wed night to Fri night

Jan 5, 2026

01/05/26 9:15am: Morning, its Monday but the snow is already flying in parts of the north-central mountains. Forecast is on track for the impending mountain snow-storm with just a few small changes.

My updated snowfall map below (increased totals a bit near Vail and Beaver Creek and even for Summit and Grand Co, decreased totals a bit near Steamboat, kept totals similar over the Elks and southern CO.... the focus appears to be over the central mountains now (I-70 corridor, west of Vail Pass). Generally 3-7" for the ski areas, refer to map below.

Snow showers this morning, with most of the snow from 2pm today through 8am tomorrow morning.

The other story (especially for the Front Range) will be the stronger winds today, especially from 11am-11pm today: for Den/Bou westerly wind-gusts of 25-50 mph. For the adjacent mountains (Front Range mountains and north-central mountains): wind-gusts of 30-60 mph (strongest near/east of the Cont. Divide).

It will also be windy over southern CO as well (similar with wind-gusts of 30-60 mph)

Storm clears out partially by Tue afternoon.

Next round of snow arrives in the mountains by Wed night into Thu morning, so not a long break. Snow likely for the mountains again from 8pm Wed through 2pm Fri: could be > 6-12" in many mountain locations and looks much colder.

Also looking like Den/Bou and the front-range lower elevations will likely get some snow from about 2pm Thu to 2pm Fri, could be like 2-6" depending on the model. I'll have more on all that later.

First image is my updated total snowfall map through just 11am Tue. Second and third images compare forecast total snowfall from now through 5pm Tue from latest CAIC WRF 2km and HRRR models. Fourth image shows forecast wind-gusts at 2pm today. Fifth image shows current composite radar with the snow moving into the mountains now.
