Unexpected snow at Winter Park overnight. Snow moving into Mountains now. Snow Reports.

Dec 9, 2024

12/09/24 8am: Wow, great to see an unexpected heavy burst of snow at Winter Park overnight as the leading edge of the cold-front and upper-level wave pushed in with 6" being reported there already this morning with more snow to come today into tomorrow. Also good to see snow starting to stack up some at some of the other local ski areas as the first short-wave pushes in.

First some notable snow reports based on what is on the snow-stakes right now:

Winter Park: 6"
Breck: 3"
Beaver Creek: 2"
Vail: 2"
Loveland: 2"
Steamboat: 2"
Powderhorn: 2"
Copper: 1"
Keystone: 1"
A-Basin: 1"
Aspen Mtn: 0.5"

Anyway, first image below (or last image if FB is still being weird) is the current IR satellite loop. What you can see is a round of snow pushing into the northern mountains now with snow showers developing over the Palmer Divide to Colorado Springs and its starting to fill in slowly to the north towards Denver...its still partly-cloudy in Den/Bou but I can see the thick cloud deck to the south...

Models still show the best chances for Den/Bou to get a little snow coming later, primarily between 5pm this evening to 12am Tue.

First round of snow for the north-central mountains will be from now through 2am Tue, then a little break before more snow comes through on the backside of the trough from 9am Tue to 2am Wed. It will also be turning very windy across parts of the mountains tomorrow, especially over the Front Range mountains along / east of the Cont. Divide.

Next I'll show the HRRR additional snowfall. How are conditions in your neck of the woods this morning?

Aside from the latest IR satellite, I show current snow-stakes for Winter Park, Breck, Beaver Creek and Loveland....looking good!
