The angry owl is set to bring some big-time rain and snow to CO Mon to Wed

May 3, 2025

05/03/25 9:20am: Morning, Happy Saturday! The angry owl, or inquisitive lemur or weather boobs are going to bring you lots of precip Mon to Wed lol. Big ol omega-block pattern with a slow moving upper-level low slated to bring big impacts to the state starting tomorrow. This is looking like a significant upslope event, with some big time rain for Den/Bou and lower elevations with some heavy snow for parts of the Front Range mountains and foothills above 8k ft. Also some heavy snow for the San Juans and Sangres. On the fourth image below I circled where the biggest impacts will be.

Generally looks like the rain/snow line will be around 7k to 8k ft with this event so all rain for Den/Bou). Here are some main points.

  • More numerous rain showers (and snow above 10kft) moves back into southwest CO / San Juans after 11am tomorrow (with rounds of rain/snow continuing down there into Mon)

  • Parts of the north-central mountains and western CO will get some rain/snow showers tomorrow: 2pm-10pm Sun

  • The main precip event for Den/Bou foothills and the front-range will be from about 12pm Mon through 6am Wed, multiple rounds of heavy rain below 8k ft, heaviest likely Tue morning.

  • Den/Bou and the front-range region will likely pick up 1.5" to 2.0" of liquid precip

  • Foothills above 8k ft could see 4-12"+ of new snow by Wed am (snow-level is still uncertain)

  • For the north-central mountains on/off round of rain and snow from 9am Mon through 9am Wed (and may continue into Wed evening). The focus for heaviest rain/snow will be along/east of the Cont. Divide: Front Range mountains (including A-Basin, Loveland, Berthoud, Winter Park, IPW, RMNP) could get 8-16"+ of new snow. Areas further west (like Summit, Eagle counties higher terrain, more like 5-12" of new snow)

  • Southern CO, including Springs to Pueblo to Trinidad can also expect very heavy rain (below 8kft, snow above that) from Tue morning through Wed pm. Pikes Peak could get > 12" of snow above 8k ft. Parts of the southern front-range may pick up 1.75" to 2.50" of liquid precip.

  • Really heavy snow also expected in parts of the San Juans and Sangre De Cristos (rounds of snow starting Sun into Mon with much more Tue into Wed, ending Thu am): 10-20" of new snow for the mountains down there above 9k ft.

  • The storm clears out of southern CO by Wed night (by Wed am in northern CO).

First image shows the upper-level pattern via forecast 500mb vorticity / wind at 6am Mon from latest GFS (what do you see lol). Images 2 and 3 show forecast total liquid precip from now through 6am Thu from latest ECMWF and GFS. Fourth image shows forecast total snowfall from now through 6am Thu from latest NWS Blend of Models...take forecast liquid and snow amounts with big grain of salt as details will change.

But this is going to be fun!
