Some snow for the mountains Tue/Wed, wind for the front-range

Feb 25, 2025

02/25/25 8am: Warm and pleasant morning along the front-range right now: Its 51 degs in Westminster under sunny skies and no wind (as of now) but we do have some weather to talk about. Current satellite/radar shows some snow showers over parts of the mountains right now (mostly Front Range mountains) ahead of a weak short-wave, slated to impact the state from this afternoon through tomorrow afternoon (the storm is pretty moisture starved).

For the north-central mountains on/off snow showers from now through 5pm Wed, with best chances between 2pm Tue to 2pm Wed. Generally light snow amounts: Trace-3" for some of the ski areas / mountains passes, best chances over the northern Front Range mountains (from Loveland ski to Jones/Berthoud, IPW, RMNP, etc, secondarily near Gore Range).

The other big story will be the expected strong wind over much of northern CO this afternoon. For both the mountains and front-range strong winds expected from 9am-9pm today:

For the north mountains and front-range mountains, westerly wind-gusts of 40-70mph, strongest in aras near IPW, RMNP.

For Den/Bou and the front-range westerly wind-gusts of 20-50mph, strongest from Boulder north to Ft. Collins and to the CO/WY boder and in the Larimer county foothills

Cooler for Den/Bou tomorrow (50s), then back to really warm and dry weather across much of the state from Thu-Sun.

Models still show a southern track low impacting southern CO Sat night into Sun (some snow for the San Juans and Sangres), otherwise dry for northern CO

Next more substantial storm slated to impact the state from next Mon night into Tue/Wed (March 3rd-6th, likely two waves). I'll have more on that later.

First image shows the next storm system via 500mb vorticity / wind valid 5am Wed from latest GFS (its moisture starved). Image two is current, local satellite/radar overlay showing some snow showers in the mountains now. Image 3 shows forecast wind-gusts at 1pm today from latest HRRR. Fourth image shows forecast total snowfall from now through 5am Thu from latest NWS Blend of Models, take amounts with grain of salt.
