Some forecast details for the Wed/Thu storm which will track south
Jan 28, 2025
01/28/25 8:15am: Morning, lets take a look at the approaching storm system. Pretty clear to me from the latest model data that the big upper-level low is going to stay pretty far south and thus limited impacts across the state but some for southern CO, especially the San Juans and Sangres which have some weather advisories in place. But for Den/Bou and the northern front-range and the north-central mountain very limited impact, some snow showers on Thu but won't be much (unless the low ends up tracking much further north. Here are some main points:
Western San Juans (including Telluride, Purg, Silverton) is under a Winter Weather Advisory from 11pm tonight through 5am Thu: 6-12” of new snow with up to 15" in a few spots
For the Eastern San Juans (including Wolf Creek) and the Sangre De Cristo are under a Winter Storm Watch from 5am Wed to 11pm Thu: also generally 6-12” of new snow with up to 15” in spots
Parts of southeast CO including Pikes Peak (and west Springs) to Pueblo / Canon City to Walsenburg and Trinidad and areas west can expect 1-4” of new snow, the highest amount west of I-25.
For Den/Bou and the front-range a slight chance for some snow-showers primarily from 2am-11am Thu, best chances from Denver south and especially near Castle Rock and south / southeast. Little to no snow accum for most areas
For the north-central mountains a slight chance for snow showers from about 11pm Wed to 11am Thu, best chances from Hoosier Pass south and East. Maybe parts of the Front Range mountains from Loveland Pass south as well, won’t be much: maybe Trace-2” in a few spots.
The storm clears out by around 6pm Thu
Looking ahead, just a little bit of snow for the northern / north-central mountains on Sat night into Sun am but currently not looking like much (with a bigger western ridge in place and most of the precip north of CO)
Next more significant storm and cold air not expected until around Feb 6th-Feb 8th, uncertainty is high (so pretty dry before this for northern CO)
