Socked in and cool on the front-range this morning, strong storms in spots later this afternoon

Jul 29, 2025

07/29/25 8:30am: Socked in and cool along the front-range this morning with rain showers over parts of the foothills and closer to Ft. Collins / Greeley areas this morning behind the expected cold-front that moved in overnight. High humidity on the front-range currently with dewpoints in the mid-60s, that will set the stage for some storms later (and will keep temps cooler today).

These low clouds should slowly clear out by noon and the sun will destabilize the atmosphere. Storms will first form in the foothills in the 12-1pm timeframe and then slowly push onto the front-range later this afternoon. Strong storms this afternoon are a bit dependent on how warm and sunny it can get by midday, so we shall see.

For Den/Bou and the front-range a chance for scattered thunderstorms from 2-8pm, best chances around the edges (foothills initially), then after 3pm, best chances south / southeast of Denver, near/along the Palmer Divide and also just east of the metro area, along/east of I-25. Later this afternoon (after 4pm), strong to severe storms expected on the eastern plains. Some small hail, heavy rain in spots.

For the north-central mountains also cloudy this morning with a few showers over the front-range mountains. Similar to the front-range, maybe some clearing by mid-day, then a good chance for scattered storms from 1pm-7pm, best chances from Summit east and along/south of I-70, also all of the Front Range mountains (RMNP, IPW, etc).

A secondary cold-front will move into the front-range tomorrow morning and it will likely be even cooler than this morning, so expect it to be socked in near Den/Bou/Ft.Collins tomorrow again. Then another good chance for storms tomorrow as well.

For the front-range (Den/Bou) on Wed a good chance for scattered strong storms again from 3pm-9pm, again best coverage expected in foothills and south/east of Denver (Palmer Divide)

Good coverage of storms in the mountains tomorrow as well, especially over central / south-central and southeast mountain areas. For the north-central mountains tomorrow: scattered storms from 1pm-2pm, best coverage from Summit Co east again (Hoosier Pass to Pikes Peak to Sangres will have heavy storms on Wed).

We will stick with good thunderstorm chances for the eastern half of the state on Thu as well, more on that later.
