Snowfall map for the impending snow storm
Jan 6, 2025
01/06/25 6:45pm: Hi, figured I'd get a snowfall map out there right as the snow is starting to fly in Denver. I'll let the map mostly speak for its self but you can see we are in for a nice upslope event, favoring the front-range from Denver to Pueblo and the foothills just to the west of that.
Snow is just getting started now over parts of Denver, up near Ft. Collins and even over parts of the southeast plains. The main event from now through 5pm Tue
The best upslope, cold air and snowfall for Den/Bou will really be between 2am-2pm Tue, heaviest snow expected during tomorrow's am commute, roads will be icy and snowpacked so heads up there
Still looking like a good 3-6" for most of Denver/Boulder with heaviest amounts from Boulder south and west of I-25. Foothills can expect 4-8". Lesser amounts further north since the main upper-level trough is tracking south. Refer to map for details
Looks like a good snow event for areas near Colorado Springs to Pueblo (with 4-8" in those areas) and a bit more west of there in the foothills
For the north-central mountains not a great setup with the expected east / northeast flow aloft so hence not much snow: generally 1-4" for some of the ski areas with highest amounts along/east of the Cont. Divide (front-range mountains will be favored locally)
Heaviest snow in the mountains will be over southern / south-central CO from Monarch south. Western San Juans (Telluride, Silverton, etc) and eastern San Juans (WC) to Collegiate Range (Monarch) should do pretty well with 4-10" down there. Refer to map
Snow ends everywhere by 5pm Tue
More light snow expected early Thu, more on that later
First image is my total snowfall map through 8pm Tue. Second image is current, composite radar showing the snow filling in over the front-range now, with light snow in the mountains. Images 3 and 4 compare forecast total snowfall from very latest 00z HRRR and 18z ECMWF (models are bit all over the place with the details but I think latest HRRR may have good handle on things, we shall see).
