Forecast for the weekend: two more hot, dry and wind days (high fire danger), cold-front and cooler for Sat and Sun

Aug 7, 2025

08/07/25 8:40am: Morning. Two more days of hot, dry and windy conditions with critical fire danger, especially over western CO.

Some relief on the way as models show a cold front moving into the front-range and across parts of northern CO on Fri night into Sat. Cooler for Den/Bou and the front-range on Sat and Sun with much better thunderstorms chances by Sun and Mon.

Unfortunately I don't see much rain for western CO, until later next week with a possible surge of monsoon moisture.

The big concern over the next 2 days is the strong wind expected over western CO both today and tomorrow from 11am-8pm each day with west / southwest wind-gusts of 30-50 mph (sustained wind of 15-30 mph). This coincides with Red Flag Warnings each afternoon (today and tomorrow).

Also some strong westerly wind expected over parts of the north-central mountains, especially across the front-range mountains and foothills both today and tomorrow: 10am-7pm: westerly wind gusts of 30-60mph, strongest near the Cont. Divide. Especially windy tomorrow near the Divide. There is a Fire Weather Watch in place from 12pm-8pm tomorrow (Friday, the 8th)

For Den/Bou and the front-range urban corridor not as windy but it will be hot today and tomorrow with high temps near 100 degs. There is a Heat Advisory in place from 10am-7pm today. Breezy this afternoon with northwest wind-gusts of 15-30 mph, similar tomorrow.

In terms of thunderstorms: only a slight chance for some storms over southeast CO today from the SLV east to Sangres and southeast / southern front-range: 3pm-9pm.

As I mentioned a cold-front is expected to move down the front-range on Sat. This will bring high temps back down to low / mid 80s for Den/Bou on Sat and Sun.

On Sat afternoon best thunderstorm chances will be generally over northeast of CO (east of a line from Greeley to DIA) but maybe a few storms for Den/Bou as well, mostly after 2pm (strongest storms over the plains after 4pm).

Then on Sunday, front-range (Den/Bou) will have its best chances for some stronger storms in spots 2pm-8pm, hit or miss thunderstorms. Some in the Front Range mountains as well, very little storms west of the Divide.

Continued decent thunderstorm chances over the front-range on Monday (likely favoring the southern front-range).

Overall smoke not as bad as the last couple days, but some smoke from the Elk and Lee Fires blowing across northern CO both this afternoon and tomorrow afternoon.

It will remain hot and dry across western CO through the extended forecast. Monsoon moisture may return by the end of next week after August 12th,...its a ways out so we shall see.

First image loop shows forecast wind-gusts over the next 48hrs (6am this morning through 6am Sat) from latest HRRR. Second image shows the local watches and advisories for today. Image 2 is a forecast high teperature table from Den/Bou NWS office. Images 4 and 5 shows the cold-front moving into the front-range on Fri evening via surface temps and dewpoints (you can see the cooler and moist air moving in).
