Forecast details for the next 48hrs (for the approaching spring storm system)

05/17/25 9:40am: Here is a look at some details for the next 48hrs as the next spring storm system moves in, which will primarily impact the state from 6am Sun through 6pm Mon (heaviest precip late Sun night / early Mon)

  • For today a few scattered rain/snow showers over the north-central mountains (and parts of western CO) from 1pm-8pm.

  • For Den/Bou and the front-range some isolated, high based storms from 2pm-9pm today, most areas stay dry

  • Rain and thunderstorms move back into western CO (Fruita / GJ areas) after 7am tomorrow morning with rounds of rain through the day and overnight: 7am Sun through 3am Mon (unfortunate for us with the rain tomorrow)

  • For the north-central mountains heavier rounds of rain/snow expected from about 12pm Sun through 6pm Mon, likely lingering into Tue morning. Most of the snow accumulation above 8500ft. Heaviest snow will be late Sun night into Mon morning. Models show 2-7" for the local ski areas / mountain passes. Highest amounts will be west of Vail Pass (up to 10-12" for upper parts of Elks, Flat Tops, Grand Mesa and central Sawatch).

  • For Den/Bou and the front-range a better chance for some scattered thunderstorms on Sun from 2pm-7pm, best chances from Boulder north to Ft. Collins. More rain showers possible Mon afternoon.

    The storm likely doesn't clear out until after Tue am (snow will linger in the mountains), could pike up in spots

  • In terms of wind: turning windy / breezy over western CO this afternoon (southwest wind-gusts of 20-30mph), strongest after 1pm

  • Then turning quite windy on Sun for much of southern CO and the central mountains: windiest 12pm Sun through 6am Mon: westerly wind-gusts of 30-60mph in spots (strongest from Leadville south

  • Turning windy / gusty on the front-range (Den/Bou) tomorrow afternoon / evening as the storms blow through (gusts of 20-50mph in spots)

  • It will remain windy over the front-range mountains on Mon into Tue above 9kf ft: wind-gusts of 30-50mph. Less wind by Tue am.
