Current storm system is moving into CO now, updated forecast and snowfall

Mar 18, 2025

03/18/25 1:40pm: Here comes our next storm system! You can see the trough pushing into western CO now with some snow in the mountains and rain showers developing along the front-range (first image is current, regional satellite loop). Already some moderate snow at some of the ski areas (like Steamboat and Aspen, image 3 is current view of the Steamboat powdercam).

Latest composite radar (image 2) shows that the main wave, with very heavy snow is approaching Glenwood Springs / Sunlight area now and will push across the rest of the mountains over the next 6 hours....there could be some road closures in spots along I-70 after 5pm today.

For Den/Bou and the front-range latest model data shows a round of more moderate rain/snow moving through between 4pm-11pm (all snow likely after 6pm this evening) but very little accumulation for the urban corridor (too much westerly downslope flow). Best chances locally for some minor snow accum will be from DIA east and also south of Denver on the Palmer Divide (Trace-3" in spots).

But latest model data shows heavier snow tonight over the eastern plains form Limon to Burlington to Sterling: 3-8" in spots. The heavy snow could cause some road closures on I-70 east of Denver after 9pm this evening.

For the north-central mountains including the I-70 mountain corridor and the local ski areas, heaviest snow will be from 5pm this evening through 5am Wed, then light snow will linger through 5pm Wed. Generally 6-12" of new snow for the local ski areas with highest amounts from Flat Tops to Sunlight to BC, to Aspen (western mountains).

Fourth image shows forecast total snowfall from now through 6pm Wed from very latest 18z HRRR, has pretty good handle on things now, but take exact amounts with grain of salt.

It will also be turning very wind in spots again this afternoon / evening (already very windy in parts of Den/Bou and the foothills).

Thats all for now. How are conditions in your neck of the woods?
