Cool with rain showers across the state this morning, active weather today and tomorrow (especially for the mountains)

Sep 5, 2025

09/05/25 8:30am: Happy Friday. Cool, cloudy and socked in on the front-range with some rain showers (and snow up high) over parts of central and southern CO currently. Only 54 at my house in Westminster with a few light rain showers around (similar for Denver) also some smoke which will linger through tomorrow mid-day.

A couple active weather days as this cold-front interacts with some deeper monsoon moisture moving in from the southwest. Later I'll show some of the heavier rain that fell over western CO near Grand Junction yesterday. But first a a look at the forecast.

For much of the north-central and south-central mountains today: rain showers this morning (snow above 12,500ft), then a break mid-day. Then a good chance for scattered, stronger storms from 12pm-11pm, bet chances after 2pm. Best coverage from Summit Co south, across all of the central mountains from San Juans to Elks to Sawatch to southern Front Range mountains to Sangres, heavy rain in spots.

For Den/Bou and the front-range today, cool and cloudy this morning then a chance for isolated storms from 3pm-8pm, best coverage from Boulder south and really in/near the foothills and along the Palmer Divide and south. Only isolated activity for much of Den/Bou (likely too capped today with the really cool air at the surface).

For tomorrow good storm coverage across much of western CO and the north-central and south-central mountains again. On the Third image below I highlight where best chances will be on Saturday.

For the north-central and south-central mountains on Sat, scattered thunderstorms from 1pm-10pm, best chances after 3pm, best coverage from Summit and Grand counties south. Some snow above 12,500ft.

For Den/Bou and the front-range on Sat: isolated storms again 2pm-8pm, best chances in/near the foothills and across the Palmer Divide south and especially closer to Colorado Springs area and the southern front-range

Atmosphere dries out on Sunday: For Sunday just a few isolated storms mostly over the northern mountains / front-range mountains from 1pm-6pm.

For the front-range on Sun isolated storms mostly from Boulder north (Ft. Collins to WY border) from 3pm-7pm.

First image shows forecast radar over the next 48hrs (6am this morning through 6am Sun) from latest HRRR. Second image is current composite radar over the state (rain showers ongoing). Third image is latest surface map over the state showing current temps, dewpt, wind-speed and precip (that snow being reported at Wilkerson Pass is wrong, its above that). Fourth image shows where the best thunderstorm coverage will be on Saturday from HRRR.
