Back to a southern track for the Wed/Thu storm less snow for Den/Bou
Jan 29, 2025
01/29/25 8am: As we talked about last night it was a very uncertain forecast for the approaching storm system, slated to impact the state from this afternoon through tomorrow afternoon...
Well it appears the big upper-level low is going to track south (main circulation is going to setup south) so likely very little snow for most of Den/Bou and the northern front-range with all the meaningful snow from the Palmer Divide south and east. Still a chance tomorrow morning between 2am-12pm, but only Trace-2" possible for Den/Bou with best chances from Den south. Parts of the PD and foothills southwest of Denver could get 1-6" in spots (but even that is uncertain).
Also looks like minimal snow for the north-central mountains as well. Still looks like a good event for southern CO / San Juans with the forecast not changed much there. Already snowing in the San Juans this morning.
For the north-central mountain only: Trace-3" in spots, best chances from A-Basin to Grays/Torreys and south/southeast also maybe from Hoosier Pass south.
San Juans from Silverton to Wolf Creek and the Sangres can still expect 6-12" by tomorrow afternoon.
Some snow for southeast CO as well from Springs south to Pueblo to Trinidad and foothill west of there: 1-6" in spots down there, highest near Pikes Peak and near Wet Mountains (only a few inches for Springs / Pueblo).
In terms of wind: some stronger wind across south-central / southern CO today: southeast wind-gusts of 20-40mph. For tomorrow some stronger wind over the Front Range mountains, front-range and southeast CO with some northerly / northeast wind-gusts of 30-50mph in spots (windiest from Hoosier Pass south and east towards Pikes Peak). Wind dies down by Thu evening.
First image shows the low at 11pm Wed from latest GFS (broad circulation with the main low further southeast). Images 2-4 compare forecast total snowfall from now through 5am Fri from very latest 12z NAM, HRRR and NAM-3km, take amounts with grain of salt but you can see where the snow will be now. (The HRRR is likely overdoing it near Castle Rock to Pikes Peak but still could be more there).
I'll have an update snowfall forecast map tonight.
