Approaching storm on track. Cold on the eastern plains

Feb 20, 2025

02/20/25 8:40am: Morning. Forecast for the approaching storm is on track for the most part with just few small changes I'm seeing. Also very cold across eastern CO and into NE / KS right now with current temps between -2 to -20 ( in NE in particular), here in Denver its 7 degs right now. There is an Extreme Cold Warning on the eastern plains (near the NE/KS border) through 11am. Its much warmer in the mountains as the storm approaches (30s).

Here are some notable snow-reports for ski areas that picked up a bit more snow yesterday (can't believe WP picked up 77" of snow in 13 days). Later I'll show 14-day totals for all the major ski areas after this storm:

Winter Park: 5” (77” in 13 days)

Loveland: 4” (63” in 13 days)

Keystone: 1” (48” in 13 days)

First image loop shows the upper-level low approaching now. Snow amounts will all depend on where that low tracks across CO.

Third image shows that much of the Den/Bou areas and the adjacent foothills (the upslope notch) is under a Winter Weather Advisory from 5pm today through 8am tomorrow morning: 3-8" of new snow (with up 10-12" in the foothills).

A few things I seeing: Looks like the main band of upslope snow is shifted just a bit south from yesterday's model runs...hence little snow north of Boulder (Boulder should be in the mix, maybe some up by Longmont, but very little north of there).

In the mountains models show very heavy snow around Winter Park, Berthoud/Jones passes, Loveland ski areas / pass, Grays/Torreys, Georgetown to Evergreen: 7-14" in those areas.

Also looks like maybe a bit more snow for parts of the Park Range from Steamboat ski north: 4-10" above Steamboat (compared to 3-7" on my snowfall map).

Biggest impacts will be from 4pm today through 9am tomorrow. I may update my snowfall map tonight (but for now the version I posted last night still stands, and I'll post in the comments).

Images 4 and 5 show forecast total snowfall from now through 11pm Fri from very latest HRRR model an CAIC WRF-2km model, these high-res models usually resolve the terrain better and are pretty good within 24-hours, still you can see a few differences, but likely close in spots (take with grain of salt).
