A look at the active weather pattern this week (maybe a return to Mauary by end of week)

Apr 27, 2025

04/27/25 9:20am: Happy Sunday! We have some weather to talk about 🙂 Enjoy this nice and warm Sunday because we have some changes on the way. I see an active weather pattern shaping up this week, starting tonight into Mon with several storms in the forecast through Fri morning. Looks like a return to Mauary by the end of the week with some good snowfall in the mountains (May pow) and some rounds of rain (and maybe some snow) for the front-range (Den/Bou). The other big story will be the strong wind at times today through Tue, especially over southern CO.

Her are some things I'm seeing.

  • Models show a large, disorganized upper-level low moving across CO from late tonight through Tue morning but the best lift and moisture will remain north of CO, with a more glancing blow over northern CO

  • Turning windy across much of the state this afternoon, especially from 12pm today through 12am Mon: southwesterly wind-gusts of 30-60 mph for parts of the mountains and southern CO with wind-gusts of 20-40mph for Den/Bou and lower elevations. It will remain windy over the Front Range mountains on Mon into Tue as well

  • Then for the north-central mountains some initial rounds of rain and snow showers from about 9pm tonight through 6am Tue (snow line initially above 10k ft, falling to below 9k ft by Mon morning): 1-3" of new snow for some of the ski areas / higher terrain favoring the northern front-range mountains (Loveland, Berthoud, Jones passes, IPW, RMNP, etc)

  • For Den/Bou and the front-range looks like a round of some scattered rain showers (weak thunderstorms) from 2am-12pm Mon initially, spotty rainfall

  • Then another round of moderate snow for the north-central mountains likely from about 2pm Tue through 8am Wed, that wave is colder so likely better snow accum: additional 2-5" seems likely for some of the ski areas / higher terrain and mountain passes. It will fell like winter again by Wed morning in the mountain, pow should be nice

  • For Den/Bou and the front-range another chance for some scattered thunderstorms and rain showers on Tue afternoon / evening as that waves comes through: 4pm-11pm (favoring foothills

  • Then models show an even colder storm system moving in from the northwest on Wed night into Thu (04/30 to 05/02) and that storm will likely bring a good round of snow to the mountains and some rain/snow to Den/Bou and the front-range as well

  • For the north-central mountains more snow expected from 6pm Wed through 9pm Thu with biggest impacts expected Thu morning: additional 2-8" of snow seems likely for some of the ski areas and mountains passes (even colder with this storm system). So it is going to start to pile up in spots (above 9k ft) with totals of 6-14"+ expected by Thu night / Fri morning (with all the wave combined)... So should be great pow skiing / Mauary conditions by Thu/Fri, stoked on that

  • Also looks like Den/Bou will have a stronger cold-front with rain and snow from 9pm Wed through 3pm Thu. Some more consistent cold rain on Wed night, then maybe all snow Thu am (3am-12pm Thu) with Trace-3" of new snow possible for Den/Bou, maybe 2-6" for parts of the foothills, uncertainty is high but looks cold and unsettled Thu (05/01) so heads up there

That is all for now, you can see its going to get active with multiple storms, colder weather and rain/snow. Stoked!

First image loop shows the evolutions of the forecast pattern via forecast 500mb vorticity / wind from now through next Sat am (05/02) form latest GFS. Second image shows forecast wind-gusts at 3pm today from latest HRRR. Images 3-4 compare forecast total liquid precip from now through 6am Fri from latest GFS and NWS Blend of Models and last image is forecast total snowfall from NWS Blend of Models through 6am Fri (all waves combined), take with big grain of salt, but you can see we have some meaningful rain/snow coming!

Oh yeah, Go Avs, Go Nugs, great games last night, also stoked both series are tied 2-2.
