A look at some forecast details for Memorial Day weekend: unsettled Sun/Mon
May 21, 2025
05/21/25 8am: Morning, still looks like we have some interesting and unsettled weather for the weekend, especially for the front-range. Models continue to show a slow moving short-wave impacting the state from Sat afternoon through Mon afternoon (biggest impacts on Sun and Mon).
For today, another windy day across much of the state especially for parts of the north-central / front-range mountains from 10am through 8pm: northwest wind-gusts of 30-60mph.
Also windy for Den/Bou and the front-range today from 12pm-7pm: northwest wind-gusts of 20-40mph
Less wind and warmer across the state on Thu and Fri
For Den/Bou and the front-range increasing thunderstorm chances each afternoon from Sat to Mon, with Sun likely being the wettest day.
On Saturday best chances will be from 4pm-10pm, and generally north/east of Denver (isolated to scattered storms)
Cold front moves down the front-range late Sat night into Sun morning and that will bring in more clouds and cooler weather
On Sun a good chance for scattered thunderstorms and rain showers from 11am-8pm, best chances in/near the foothills but much of the metro area could get rain (wet in spots Sun afternoon).
Also look like good rain chances near Colorado Springs to Pueblo on Sun afternoon / evening (southern front-range and southeast CO)
It will remain cool and mostly cloudy into Mon (Memorial Day) but likely dry in the morning, then another good chance for scattered rain showers / weak thunderstorms from 12pm-8pm again, wet in spots Mon afternoon (best chances in/near the foothills again)
For the north-central / south-central mountains and western CO actually looks drier overall than the front-range and eastern plains
Isolated to scattered thunderstorms (and snow showers above 10k ft) from 3pm-9pm on Sat, best chances north of I-70
On Sun a chance for scattered storms from 12pm-9pm, with best chances along/east of the Cont. Divide: Front Range mountains, less rain further west
A better chance for scattered storms on Mon afternoon, again 12pm-9pm, with best chances likely over south-central CO (from Summit south towards Sawatch, Elks and San Juans), Also pretty good chances over the front-range mountains again on Mon (after 1pm).
So you can see it will be unsettled weather especially Sun and Mon with heaviest precip on the front-range and eastern plains.
First image shows the weekend short-wave at 3pm Sat from latest ECMWF. Image 2 shows forecast wind-gusts at 2pm today from latest HRRR. Third image shows forecast total liquid precip from now through 9pm Mon from latest ECMWF model...take amounts with grain of salt as it will be more spotty than this due to the convective / thunderstorm nature of the rain.
